Recent Readings

I have been reading a lot lately, well really what else is new.
And I want to tell you about a few of my favorites.

Beautiful Ruins, Jess Walter
This was a book that I just could not put down. Spanning over decades and interweaving story lines Beautiful Ruins starts with a young Italian and his dreams of attracting the rich and famous to his tiny coastal town. I recommend to avoid synopses for this book as they are full of spoilers.

True Refuge, Tara Brach
This is my favorite meditation book. I find just quieting the mind too hard to commit to on a regular basis. Tara’s book is filled with different techniques and guided meditations which are much easier to fit into daily life.

Lullabies for Little Criminals, Heather O’Neill
Has anyone else read this Canadian masterpiece of a book? Baby is thirteen and is quickly learning that she has only herself to rely on if she wants to make it to adulthood and we watch her struggle and triumph along the way. Equal parts charming and heartbreaking, Lullabies is beautifully written and a definite reread.

Secret Daughter, Shilpi Somaya Gowda
Another page turner that took me just a few days to read. It starts with a women in India sneaking off fearfully into the night to have her baby in solitary. She must make sure it is a boy before she presents the child to her husband.

Yoga Nidra, Swami Satyananda Saraswati
Yoga Nidra is a form of guided meditation new to the type of classes that I offer to students. Because it is 45 minutes laying flat on the floor it’s no surprise that often they fall asleep and I am reading to a room of snorers and heavy breathers. This book gives great background information and example classes.

Two books I am about to start; Self Hypnotism by Leslie M. LeCron a book from 1964. It was being given away by a friend so I thought why not. And The Storyteller by Jodi Picoult about an unlikely friendship between a young woman and an elderly man.

I ALWAYS read “Illusions” by Richard Bach (he also wrote “Jonathan Living Seagull”) whenever I need a reminder about life.
