You are young. So you know everything. You leap
into the boat and begin rowing. But listen to me.
Without fanfare, without embarrassment, without
any doubt, I talk directly to your soul. Listen to me.
Lift the oars from the water, let your arms rest, and
your heart, and heart’s little intelligence, and listen to
me. There is life without love. It is not worth a bent
penny, or a scuffed shoe. It is not worth the body of a
dead dog nine days unburied. When you hear, a mile
away and still out of sight, the churn of the water
as it begins to swirl and roil, fretting around the
sharp rocks – when you hear that unmistakable
pounding – when you feel the mist on your mouth
and sense ahead the embattlement, the long falls
plunging and steaming – then row, row for your life
toward it.

Currently I am immersed in Restorative Yoga training so I can begin teaching it to my students in the new year. Restorative Yoga is the practice of using simple, supported postures to bring the body to a state of neutral allowing self restoration to occur. It helps to reduces stress, headaches and insomnia, lowers blood pressure, reduces muscle tension and improves energy and concentration. In a restorative class you will spend an hour an a half listening to the teachers calming voice and yoga music while moving through 5-8 asanas (postures) all the while being supported by bolsters, blankets and other props. It is completely rejuvenating!
At the end of a class it is immediately measurable how much calmer, clearer thinking and relaxed you are. Through regular restorative you begin to see that quality of sleep deepens and you experience fewer physical issues. The common misconception about restorative yoga is that it is a practice for injured people when in fact it is a preventative practice meant for healthy people to practice regularly to avoid injuries. The term “restorative” refers to restoring your central nervous system, organs, blood, state of mind. Of course people with injuries will see benefits as well and because it is a slower paced yoga it is the most accessible yoga for persons with physical limitations.
Have you ever heard of or practiced restorative yoga before?
