Geisha

Category: My OutfitsEyeliah

On Friday and Saturday I was a geisha, Friday with a mask and Saturday with a fan.  I realized that I didn’t get any good photos but I found these two from friends.  The costume cost me a total of $2 for the fan.

Happy Halloween!

Last Minute Halloween Costumes Found In Your Closet

Category: ProjectsEyeliah

The post was originally on Style Symmetry on October 28, 2009.

Halloween parties start tomorrow…. do you know what your costume is?  Fear not as there are many last minute ideas lurking in your smart and savvy wardrobe.  With the help of polyvore here are my top five choices for the gal in a rut.

What are your last minute costume ideas?

School Girl – This was my last minute costume in 2006 when I had one hour to put a look together.  The school girl can be done in the innocent or the sassy way.  To be innocent think high buttoned top, knee length skirt and nerdy glasses.  For sassy tie the top to reveal your midriff and for the skirt the shorter the better, maybe some red lipstick and pigtails?  For both a pleated or plaid skirt, white knee socks and Mary Jane heels or patent ballet flats are required.

Frazzled Housewife – First start with a nightgown or housecoat and fuzzy slippers.  Do you have a shower cap or some curlers?  This is the topper but if not dump baby powder into your hair.  Apply messy mascara and smeared lipstick and grab a rolling pin or frying pan from the kitchen.  Now walk around with a chip on your shoulder.

1950′s Housewife – The antithesis of the last costume, this housewife has it pulled together.  Grab your favorite full skirt vintage dress and an apron, if you don’t have an apron any shirt or frilly fabric tied at the waist can mimic the effect.   Now high or kitten heels, pearl earrings or necklace and perhaps a tray of cupcakes or cookies, pass them out to friends or put candy on the tray if you are greeting trick or treaters.

Pirate – Hopefully you have an eye patch in your closet, if not it can be easily made or passed on.  A white frilly shirt, red scarf for a waist sash, any dark or leather vest and tall brown boots.  This can be worn with a skirt or pants, perhaps pile on some extra scarves or tie one on your head.  For makeup smudge Kohl around your eyes for that dash of Jack Sparrow sexiness.  Bonus points if you have a sword, gun or Jolly Roger.

Ghost – This is for those with only a few moments to get ready or the truly lazy (well done).  You must be willing to sacrifice a white sheet.  If not maybe find one at a second hand shop.

Looking for Work

Category: Life,YogaEyeliah

I am looking for a part time job to help supplement my yoga teaching.  Since I got back from Europe in May I’ve had enough money to pay rent and to eat and that may be just about it….  Life is great but now that summer is over I feel ready to be more productive.  Last time I looked for part time work other than yoga was when I went door to door in January.  It did not go well not even receiving one call back.  This time I need to work at it more diligently, friends are going to Vegas in February and to have any chance in joining them I need a few more dollars in my bank account.

I’ve only actually ever had two non yoga jobs in this city!  And they were both really hard for me to find.  Vancouver doesn’t advertise jobs in newspapers, they seem to all be on craigslist.  The challenge with this is that since you don’t have to pay to use craigslist, anyone can post job ads which means a lot of fakes and placement agencies and also a lot of competition between job seekers.

I am determined to find something, so things may be a bit quiet on here this week.  Wish me luck!

Friendly Fires with Theophilus London Commodore Ballroom Vancouver October 18, 2011 Setlist

Category: Set ListsEyeliah

The show last night at the Commodore is the best I have been to in a long time!  I arrived early enough to catch the opening act for once, and it turned out that Theophilus London had almost as many fans there as Friendly Fires.  I didn’t know the band previously but of course recognized I Stand Alone.  They really got the crowd moving with their lively 40 minute set.

Highlights; They brought out a cardboard cutout of Micheal Jackson and propped him up at a mike for two songs which was hilarious and the guitarist and bassist did a great dance to a remix of Hey Big Spender.  Best opening act I’ve seen since Sleigh Bells a few years back.

Thirty minutes later the lights dimmed for Friendly Fires to take the stage.

I’ve been listening to Friendly Fire’s music for a few years (thanks Jess) but have never watched a video or even knew where they are from though I correctly assumed they are English.  Immediately the lead singer Ed Macfarlane starts busting out these wild dance moves and sweating through his collared shirt.  Then halfway into the first song Lovesick he jumps down into the crowd (right in front of me) and finishes up the track dancing and grooving with the crowd.  It brought everyone to life!  He proceeded to this four, five, I don’t know six more times in the next hour and fifteen minutes.  This was the best concert dance party I’ve ever been to, and I’ve gone to many shows in the past five years.  Great night, thank you Friendly Fires and Theophilus London.

Only sad note, I bought a  FF t-shirt but came home to discover holes at the collar.  I wrote the band, but who knows if/when they’ll get it, I’m hoping for a replacement.

My First Bake

Category: CookingEyeliah

I decided that this fall/winter I am going to learn to bake.  I started with Banana Bread since I heard it’s the easiest. I followed Janet’s Rich Banana Bread recipe off All Recipes.  Usually I change around recipes, never following them exactly but since this was my first baking excursion I thought sticking closely to the instructions would be best.  I exchanged cane sugar for white sugar.

It turned out delicious, almost half has already been eaten.

It made quite a mess too!

Next up are quiches and pies.
